Q

Protozoa
- Know the difference between a trophozoite and cyst

A

trophozoite phase: active eating/growing form
cyst: resting, protected stage better for survival/spread

Q

What are the two ways in which protozoa reproduce asexually? What is schizony?

A

Binary : chromosomes are copied and separated and the cells split
Schizony process:
1) nucleus divides many times, each cell contains many nuclei
2) small portions of cytoplasm surround each nuclei and the cells separate into daughter cells

Q

What are the two major ways in which protozoa reproduce sexually?
- Know the process of conjugation and how it works

A

some species undergo meiosis to produce haploid gametes, and the gametes fuse to produce a diploid zygote

conjugation
- 2 nuclei, micronucleus and a micronucleus
1) two cells fuse and the haploid micronuclei are exchanged
2) they fuse into a new diploid micronucleus
3) this new micronucleus replaces the micronucleus

Q

Know the basic properties of the flagellates – what are flagella and what do they do? What are undulating membranes?

A

Flagellates have long whip-like tails called flagella that they use to move, acquire food, and sense their surroundings
- some have an undulating membrane which folds in a wave-like movement

Q

Flagellates
- What happens if they lack mitochondria?
– know that some cause disease

A

if they lack mitochondria, then they must obtain ATP from a host, and in this way they are obligate parasites

Q

What are the apicomplexa and what are their major properties?

A

Apicomplexa are non-motile obligate intracellular parasites that have complex life cycles
- usually infect multiple hosts
- have structures at tips that help it to penetrate host tissues
