Eukaryotic Cell Anatomy Review Flashcards
mitochondria
participate in cellular respiration and cell suicide
Endoplasmic reticulum
Rough ER (coated in ribosomes): a site of protein synthesis
Smooth ER (not coated in ribosomes): function is storage, lipid synthesis, and detoxification
Golgi apparatus
where the proteins sent from the ER get sorted and sent to a membrane destination
Nucleus and nucleolus
Nucleus stores genome, and in the nucleolus makes ribosomes
– functions: storage of the genome, site of transcription, and ribosome synthesis (production of ribosomes)
Chloroplasts
do photosynthesis
Vesicles, lysosomes, and peroxisomes
- vesicles function to move stuff around the cell
- lysosomes have hydrolytic enzymes and acids to destroy invaders, pathogens, and food particles
- paroxizomes: detoxify and oxidize fatty acids
Cilia and flagella
involved in movement
Ribosomes
make protein
Cytoskeleton
provides structural stability and shape, as well as playing a role in movement
Cell wall
protects what comes in and out of the cell, gives the cell some shape
