quiz 5 mod. 5 Flashcards
interspecific competition
the competition between individuals of different species
intraspecific
the competition between individuals of the same species
What do species compete for?
Species may compete for nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, iron…), prey, water etc. But species can also compete for the physical space required to live. Typically, the species will compete for the resource that is limiting.
What is Competition?
the direct or indirect interaction of organisms that leads to a change in fitness when the organisms share the same resource. The outcome usually has negative effects on the weaker
competitor
How do you interpret a graph showing competition– monocultures (only one species) vs
polycultures (more than one species)
● Why do the species need to be randomly distributed in the available space?
to avoid interference of any local condition on certain treatments
● Be able to interpret a species competition data graph
Experimental setup for species competition (hypothesis
Experimental setup for species competition dependent
Experimental setup for species competition independent variables
Experimental setup for species competition controls
Experimental setup for species competition replicates
