Q

Draw the I-Centered and God-Centered models and contrast the perspective of each:

A

I-centered: Life is all about you. Each person, situation, circumstance, emotion, etc. is filtered through the perspective of how does this affect me? Am I getting what I want of it? Even God is seen through this self-centered lens. Therefore, it is a philosophy grounded in oneself as the authority and FAITH in the belief that life is about getting as much as one wants and avoidance of doing/experiencing what one doesn’t want.
God-centered: Life is all about God. It is an acknowledgement that God created the world and everything in the world including you. Therefore, we filter each person, situation, circumstance, emotion, etc. is through the perspective of what is God calling me to do. Therefore, individuals make God the authority of their life and put their FAITH in the belief that by following His command to Love God and Love others in all ways they will develop the gifts they have been given and be able to use those gifts in the service of the needs of their lives.

45
Q

Draw the competitive (vertical) and cooperative (horizontal) models and contrast the perspectives of each.

A

Competitive: An individual’s person worth and significance is developed by comparing yourself to both your past actions and the accomplishment/failure of others. When you are high on the scale, you feel a sense of pride (Mania) in your accomplishments and use the evidence (money, popularity, acceptance, etc) that you are better than others or you past self to feel good about yourself. Conversely, when you are low on the scale, you feel a sense of sadness (Depression) due to a lack of any evidence that shows you are worth anything in the eyes of yourself and others. This model is competitive because when you are comparing yourself to others you are competing with them for recognition and accomplishment. Furthermore this model represents the false belief that you can please God (be justified) by your works. *Note: The condition of Manic Depression is the consequence of this flawed thinking. See above where each of these extremes are found.
Cooperative: Life is all about God. It is an acknowledgement that God created the world and everything in the world including you. God Loves ALL people and God has given ALL people unique gifts and God uniquely calls ALL people. Therefore, we are all equal in God’s Love, and the purpose of our life is to identify and develop our gifts in order to accomplish our calling. Furthermore, we are also equal in the reality that ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. This model is co-operative because God calls us to love others and seek unity. Furthermore, this model represents being justified by your faith in God, rather than what you do.

46
Q

Draw the Instant and Delayed Gratification models and discuss how it shows the relationship between choices and consequences.

A

All individuals face numerous choices throughout their day. When facing these choices, the primary decision is rooted in choosing something that pleases us (what we want to do) or something that we don’t necessarily want to do, but recognize that we have to do it in order to benefit from it later. The model above illustrates the level of emotion we experience at this initial choice and subsequently the level of emotion we feel as the result of the initial choice. It is important to note, that the intensity of emotion you feel (the level or strength of what you feel) is significantly higher with the consequences of our choices. *(see the note after the two scenarios below).
Instant Gratification: Choosing to please ourselves in the moment, we experience a negative, painful consequence.
Delayed Gratification: Choosing to sacrifice what we want in the moment, we experience a positive, pleasurable consequence.Below are two examples of this model in everyday life: STUDYING FOR A TEST
Do I study for the test (pain) or spend time with friends, watch tv, or on social media (pleasure).
Initial Choice – I spend time with friends, watch tv or on social media
Consequence – Results in a poor grade (pain of feeling undisciplined, developing low self-confidence)
Initial Choice – I study for the test
Consequence – Results in a good grade (pleasure in the sense of accomplishment)
*In these two scenarios the intensity of the emotion we feel at the initial choice is significantly higher in the consequences: Studying for a test: The PAIN of studying for the test is less than the PAIN one feels of low self-confidence or feeling undisciplined. The PLEASURE of spending time with friends, TV, etc is less than the PLEASURE one feels of accomplishment. Spending Money:The PAIN of making the payment is less than the PAIN one feels of being in debt, having increased fees, borrowing money.
The PLEASURE of spending time with friends is less than the PLEASURE one feels of being financially responsible.
