Quiz 1 Flashcards
Friday September 6 - Wednesday September 11
What is an autopsy?
A medical examination of body after death
Pros of autopsy
No sophisticated tools required
possible to see where muscles and cartridges are located and how they attach
Possible to see shapes of organs
Cons of autopsy
No way to see movement in action
No knowledge on physiology is possible
Everyone varies
What is an x-ray
A form of electromagnetic radiation, similar to visible light
Medical x-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body
Pros of x-ray
Nice images if used with metal
Con of x-ray
Tongue/skin surface does not show up clearly
Cannot do now due to harm to body
Not approved by ethics
How did Daniel Jones use x-ray?
Swallowed a lead chain along the length of his tongue to see how the tongue moved between vowels
What is an ultrasound?
Pros of ultrasound
Tongue surface is clearly visible
Not invasive
Harmless to human body
Can see action in real time
Cons of an ultrasound
Does not image through bones well
Often tongue root is difficult to track due to hyoid bone
Hard to see laterals
Waves cannot transfer from one medium to another, they just bounce back
What is an MRI
MRI is a noninvasive way for a medical professional to examine your organs, tissues and skeletal system
Pros of an MRI
Fleshy parts are nicely imaged
Can see soft tissue
Not that invasive
Can see a wider range of organs
Can see articulation in real time
Cons of an MRI
Very expensive
Uncomfortable for people with claustrophobia
What is the sub-laryngeal tract?
Anything that is under the larynx (e.g., trachea, lungs, diaphragm)
What is the role of the diaphragm/how does it work?
Mover of the lungs since the lungs do not have muscles
Diaphragm expands, the lungs squeeze and we exhale
Diaphragm contracts, the lungs expand and we inhale
What are intercostals and what is their role?
Muscles located in between the ribcage
Raise the ribcage to expand the chest cavity to allow more air into the lungs
Exhaling lowers the ribcage due to internal intercostal
What are the cartilages of the larynx?
thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, epiglottis, arytenoid cartilage
