Mechanism of Action
Bactericidal, mostly gram- bacteria
Broad-spectrum antibiotic
Alters bacterial DNA, leading to cell death
Indications
Extensive gram- bacteria coverage
RI, GI, skin, bone, and joint infections
Contraindications
Known drug allergy
Adverse Effects
GI disturbances, CNS effects
Increased risk for tendinitis and tendon rupture
Muscle weakness, breathing difficulties
Interactions
Concurrent use with antacids, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, or sucralfate will cause a decrease in oral absorption
Dairy products and enteral feedings can reduce absorption
Oral anticoagulants
Nursing Considerations/Patient Teaching
Avoid intake with dairy and mineral supplements
Increase fluid intake
Decrease sun exposure
