Mechanism of Action
A
Bacteriostatic but can be bactericidal in high concentrations
Effective against a broad range of infections such as RI and skin/soft tissue infections
Syphilis, Lyme disease, Chlamydia

Spirochetal infections (syphilis, Lyme)
STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia)

Contraindications
A
Known drug allergy
Used as an alternative for β-lactam antibiotic allergies

A
GI related adverse effects (nausea, vomiting, constipation)

Oral contraceptives
Cytochrome P450
Simvastatin/Lovastatin

Nursing Considerations/Patient Teaching
A
Cannot be given with fruit juices
Usually taken with food
Will cause severe interactions with other protein-bound drugs
