Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis

Effective against gram+ bacteria
Extended-spectrum penicillin covers gram+, gram-, and anaerobic bacteria
Pneumonia, strep throat, sepsis, GI

Contraindications
A
Known allergy to penicillin
Important to have an accurate history of allergy

Allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Oral contraceptives
Warfarin

Nursing Considerations/Patient Teaching
A
Take oral doses with water NOT juice, and/or food
Monitor patients for an allergic reaction for at least 30 mins after administration
Safe during pregnancy
