Questions 1 thru 6 p2 Flashcards
What disease state does hyperlipidemia cause?
CAD - Coronary Artery Disease (atherosclerosis)
leading to stroke and myocardial infarction
What is another name for hyperlipidemia?
High Cholesterol (high fat in blood)
What are lipoproteins?
Proteins with some fat that circulate in blood to transport fats, hormones and other substances
Where are lipoproteins synthesized?
- Intestinal Mucosa
2. Liver
Name the Lipoproteins
- Chylomicron “the biggest”
- HDL - High Density Lipoprotein
- IDL - Intermediate Density Lipoprotein
- LDL - Low Density Lipoprotein
- VLDL - Very Low Density Lipoprotein
List lipoproteins from High to Low for TG levles
- Chylomicron
- VLDL
- LDL
- HDL
List lipoproteins from High to Low for Protein levels
- HDL
- LDL
- VLDL
- Chylomicron
List lipoproteins from High to Low for Cholesterol levels
- LDL
- HDL
- VLDL
- Chylomicron
Name 4 cholesterol lowering drugs
- Gemfibrozil
- Niacin
- Cholestryamine
- Statin Drugs
What is the MOA of Gemfibrozil?
- inhibits synthesis of VLDL
2. increase activity of lipoprotein lipase activity
What is lipoprotein lipase?
An enzyme that INHIBITS synthesis of cholesterol in liver
What is the MOA of the drug Niacin?
NOT a drug - Vitamin B3
- inhibits lipolysis in adipose tissue
- decreases synthesis of TG - needed for synthesis of VLDL
What’s notable about Niacin and what can you do about it?
Can cause flushing and itching
take ASA to reduce inflammation
What is another name for Cholestryamine?
Bile Sequestrants
What is the MOA of Cholestryamine/bile sequestrants?
DECREASE LDL by:
- decreasing bile acid (drug = resin that attaches to (-) bile acids and excretes them in feces
- liver then converts cholesterol to bile acid
- which depletes cholesterol store in liver
- so liver takes LDL from blood to make more cholesterol for storage
