We ask open questions
to set the client up for information to be pulled out
Questioning evaluation
1) Good open
2) Appropriate closed
3) Appropriate closed
A closed question is appropriate/advantageous
1) Clarification (when you say mat, do you mean your husband mat or friend mat)
2) Need direct answer (have you been thinking about killing yourself/safety, decision: so what are we thinking of doing?)
AVOID
1) Why questions (what, how, tell me about, etc.)
2) Ask ONE question at a time (let them process and answer)
3) Could questions (giving them suggestions/telling them what to do)
4) Questions as statements (again, suggestions/telling them what to do) in other words don’t ask questions about what they should or shoudln’t be doing

Open Questions
Increase exploration, enrich client story, learn details about client world
Reflective questions
open in nature but with unique focus to open up space, develop story, and expand meaning
Exception questions
experiences counter to problem
Hypothetical questions
creates a new possibility to discuss
Ranking questions
creates meaning and difference related to value/importance of items-more story
Meaning questions
gathers values, importance, etc.
Relationships
investigation of the connection and space between important people, feeling, thoughts, and behavior
