Encouragers:
What you have been doing, but don’t use encouragers when silence may have been better
Questions:
Try not to use any at all, but if you do make sure it’s clinically relevant, an OPEN question, ONE question NOT double, and follows the natural flow of everything (not forced because you don’t know what to say or want to escape the silence)
Paraphrasing:
1) Avoid parroting back what the client just said
2) Reflect back clinically relevant and appropriate information
Reflection of Feeling:
1) Use FEELING words that are similar to what the client said without repeating the exact word back
2) Stay with a feeling mentioned by the client instead of jumping around to other things
Summarizing:
Be more intentional with your summarizations and reflect content that was major/important and most discussed (Reflect content, behaviors, feelings, and future plans)
