How do you focus (saying name adds more weight)
1) begin with the individual client
2) personal pronouns and the client name place focus on the client
Want to get to the root cause of “Problems” such as divorce, alcoholism, etc. (get to the why)
Immediacy
brings something to light/brings things here and now
“I notice that every time you say lonely, you look like you are fighting back tears.”
Cultural/environmental/context (clients have different cultural backgrounds)
Get curious and ask client to explain cultural, environmental, and political views/ let a client teach you something to deeper understanding about them along with grow relationship
every client should be assessed on their spirituality
can get to meaning faster/ help to understand their mentality
Psycheducation
- teach how to fish (“I statements”)
- gain knowledge (on why we think a certain way)
- prevention (feelings, coping skills, making friends)
- new perspective (black and white thinking)
- help the client to understand what intervention/technique is going to be used
