What is quality in health care ?
“Quality is meeting and exceeding the customer’s needs and expectations and then continuing to improve”.
How many domains are there which were identifies by the institute of medicine as quality in healthcare and what do these encompass ?

What does acronym S.T.E.E.E.P sand for ?
- safety
- timely
- effective

What does the domain “safety” represent ?
Safety = is avoiding harm to staff and patients from the care that is intended to help them e.g. keeping a record of near misses.
What does the domain “TIMELY” cover ?
Timely = care reducing waits and harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care e.g. can you access the care you need when you need it ?
What does the domain “effective” refer to ?
Effective = care based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit and refraining from actions to those not likely to benefit e.g. Drug A could be better than Drug B, for some types of diabetes.
What does the domain “efficiency” reference ?
Efficiency = avoids waste, of equipment, supplies, ideas and energy e.g. best treatment in the quickest way possible.
What does the domain “equitable” reference ?
Equitable = care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristic such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socio-economic status e.g. ensure that all people have equal access to the NHS service.
What does the domain “person-centered” cover ?
Person-centered = care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions e.g. shared decision making.
What is improvement science ?
“Improvement science is about finding out how to improve and make changes in the most effective way. It is about systematically examining the methods and factors that best work to facilitate quality improvement.”
