Invented in 1440’s, arguably the most important invention during the Renaissance, allowed ideas to spread widely across Europe

Secularism, individualism & humanism
Humanism
VERY important in the Renaissance, a philosophy that emphasized the revival of Greek and Roman culture and texts
Individualism
Emphasized the triumph of the individual over society and self-improvement, stated that humans are capable of ANYTHING
Secularism
The transition to religious ideas and dependence to secular, worldly beliefs and practices
MA art characteristics
Very religious oriented, didn’t focus much on looking realistic as the materials used in the art; many artworks were of people
Renaissance art characteristics
Focusing on naturalism, less religious than MA art
de Medici family
Famous for transitioning to cloth-making to finance and banking, governed Italian city-states, particularly Florence
Three motives for European exploration
God, glory, gold
Mercantilism
Major concept of trade, focused on the idea that silver & gold were more valuable than actual goods; exporting > importing tradable goods

Renaissance artist & sculpturist who focused on naturalism & idealism
