Process of choosing from a pool of applicants and hiring individuals who best fulfill the requirements of the job

Starts with an HR exercise to see if you need to hire but can also start from a manager saying that they need help, or someone needing to be replaced

Advantages of internal recruitment
They don’t need as much training, familiar with the people, work environment, know what’s expected of them, depending on the position in question, it’s not as much of a change
You know how they perform
Costs less
Transfers can allow employees to broaden their skill sets and differentiate
Advantages of external recruitment
Hiring people who are actually qualified, and not just promoting an existing employee who was doing well
Brings unique skills and experience
Brings new ideas and energy
Has a different perspective and can think outside of the box
Hiring someone from a competitor can bring intel

Looking for people who can be backups for essential/key positions in the company. If someone of core importance left the company tomorrow, how will you recover?
Active candidates
People that visit websites, career pages, and actively apply for jobs
Passive candidates
People that aren’t actively looking for work. The company must go out and find them, and you have to convince them that your company has a better opportunity than their current role

Involves researching potential candidates fitting the profile we are looking for, and then reaching out directly to them to see if they might be interested. In this market, it is difficult to recruit without going directly to the potential candidates, which would make the other sources less effective
