Describe the layout of the movement
1st Idea- bar 1-16.1 2nd Idea- bar 16.2-27.1 3rd Idea- bar 27.2-33 1st Idea (melodic inversion)- bar 33-51.1 4th Idea- bar 51.2-58 1st Idea- bar 59-64 2nd Idea- bar 64-80
Describe Idea 1 (bar 1-16.1)
It's a triple time main theme (falling 5 note scale followed by a rising scale). It is imitated: down an octave in violas (bar 3) down 4th in 2nd violins (bar 5) down 2 octaves in continuo (bar 8) down 4th in 1st violins (bar 10) returns to trumpet (bar 13)
Describe Idea 2 (bar 16.2-27.1)
Block homorhythmic string chords are antiphonally answered by the trumpet in descending triads. It consists of a rhythmic idea repeated on a monotone and is related to the 1st idea, just misses out the initial quaver
Describe Idea 3 (bar 27.2-33)
Just for the continuo and trumpet and the trumpet has a one bar phrase that’s sequenced in bar 28-30 leading to a short cadential phrase in bar 31-33
Describe Idea 1 (melodic inversion- bar 33-51.1)
1st violins have subject (bar 33)
down 4th in 2nd violins (bar 34)
down an octave in violas (bar 36)
down 2 octaves in continuo (bar 41)
at pitch in trumpet (bar 47)
suspension in 1st violins (bar 39= 7-6 sus)
There is a redundant entry in 1st violins in Bm (bar 46) and ends on an imperfect cadence
Describe Idea 4 (bar 51.2-58)
An ‘episode’ develops in the trumpet and 1st violins in unison (a rising 4th then falling 3rd) which is antiphonally followed by continuo which is sequenced down a note and repeated. C natural continuo false relation in bar 54
Describe Idea 1 (bar 59-64)
The 1st idea returns contrapuntally with the trumpet and 1st violins playing in unison and the 2nd violins playing in 3rd to the melody. It’s accompanied homophonically by lower strings.
Describe Idea 2 (bar 64-80)
Strings play a repeated monotone pattern moving the last note to the succeeding note in the D major arpeggio. The trumpet copies, then there is a cadential phrase in the strings (repeated by the 1st violins and trumpet with the continuo). Ends with 3 bars of the tonic chord
