Pumping Operations Flashcards
Residual Pressure …
… is only displayed on the intake gauge when the supply side of the pump is under pressure (from a hydrant, relay engine, or tanker)
Pumping Multiple Lines
Drop from static pressure to residual pressure helps determine how many more lines can be supplied
Drop less than 10% - add 3 more lines of equal GPM
Drop from 10% to 20% - add 2 more lines of equal GPM
Drop from 20% to 25% - add 1 more line of equal GPM
Drop exceeding 25% - may be able to pump smaller lines only
Ladder Pipes
- 80 PSI Automatic Fog Nozzle or Smooth Bore Stacked Tips
- Automatic Fog Nozzle rated 2000 GPM, however the waterway is limited to 1000 GPM
- Smooth Bore tips range up to 2”
- Within 100ft, supply at 150 PSI
*Mid-ship turntables have side intakes; rear-mount turntables have a single rear intake
Deck Gun
- Fog nozzle at 100 PSI; flow rates 500, 750, 1000, 1250 GPM
- Smooth Bore NP 80 PSI; Tips:
1-1/4” - 400 GPM
1-3/8” - 500 GPM
1-1/2” - 600 GPM
1-3/4” - 800 GPM
2” - 1000 GPM - Add 10 to 25 PSI for FL in appliance
- Add 25 PSI for each 100ft of 2-1/2” siamese hose for FL
Mini-monitor
- Uses a single 2-1/2” inlet
- Flows 500 GPM at 100 PSI
- Hose stretch in excess of 200ft; use siamese and dual 2-1/2” hose
Hydrant Connections
- Single 5” hose
- 6” hard suction hook up
- Full hydrant connection
- Single 6” soft sleeve hose
High Flow Hydrant
- Hard Suction/6” Soft Sleeve hose
- Permit flow up to 2000 GPM
- Flow through BIV
Full Hydrant Connection
- Steamer and one 2-1/2” discharge on the hydrant
- Connecting second 5” hose to 2-1/2” threads requires Storz to 2-1/2” adapter and additional section of 5” hose
- Increase water supply by 25%
Relay Pumping
- Recommended initial PDP is 50 PSI plus 10 PSI per 100ft of hose
- Goal is 50 PSI residual pressure at each engine pumping w/the exception of the attack engine
Two limitations for source and relay engines:
- 200 PSI max PDP
- 10 PSI min residual pressure
- Practical volume limit 5” hose is 1600 GPM (four times the amount of 2-1/2” hose)
- Each Engine shall pump 5” hose through LDH discharge. When pumping two 5” lines, the 2-1/2” located on officer’s side is preferred (has 3” piping with 2-1/2” threads)
- Relay pump in VOLUME/RPM
Tandem Pumping
- Intake to intake
- Initial attack engine allows second attack engine to have residual water
- Providing water from intake avoids high PDP while providing same volume
- Must be a strong hydrant
- Initial Attack Engine must have substantial residual pressure
- Engines must be within one section of hose to limit FL
- Initial Attack Engine must have all necessary lines in place and flowing prior to transferring residual water
- Second Attack Engine cannot “steal” water from the Initial Attack Engine
- Both engines can draw below 10 PSI residual causing both pumps to cavitate
- Both engines must maintain 10 PSI residual pressure
Sprinkler Systems
150 PSI PDP
- Drop in pressure means sprinkler heads are opening
- *When gating down, if pressure does not decrease, water is not flowing
- **Keep Recirculator open
Standpipe Systems
100 PSI PDP
*If more pressure is needed, have second Engine supply and pump 100 PSI and add to it to increase needed pressure
FDCs
- If frozen swivel, install a 2-1/2” double male and then double female
- If FDC is blocked or inoperable, use 2-1/2” double female and a Siamese, pump into first floor standpipe outlet
- Pressure reducing standpipe outlet valves will not permit this technique
- If additional flow is needed, place one or two Siamese adapters into the FDC
Drafting
- Static water source must be deep enough to allow 1ft of strainer clearance from the bottom and 18” below the water surface
- Max height for drafting is 25ft
- If water surface more than 10ft below steamer, do not expect to reach full pump capacity
- Booster stream can break vortex if one occurs
- Pumps rated at 1750 or 2000 GPM must use both steamer connections to reach full pump capacity (requiring 4 sections of hard suction)
- Throttle RPM to 1000-1200 before activating primer
- 1500 GPM pumps, limit primer to 45 sec
- 1750 or 2000 GPM, extend primer to 90 sec when using both steamer intakes
- Allow 50 PSI before disengaging primer
