Pulmonary HTN Flashcards
what is the pressure of the pulmonary system?
20mmHg
a lot lower than systemic arterial circulation due to low resistance
what is the definition of pulmonary HTN?
pressure >25mmHg
what are some causes of pulmonary hypertension ?
left heart disease
lung parenchymal disease (COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, CF, bronchiectasis)
pulmonary vascular disease (idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary vasculitis, sickle cell, pulmonary embolism, portal HTN)
hypoventilation (obstructive sleep apnoea, morbid obesity, neuromuscular)
what neuromuscular conditions could lead to hypoventilation ?
motor neurone disease
myasthenia gravis
polio
what investigations should be done for pulmonary hypertension ?
right heart catheterisation (gold standard)
ECG
ECHO
- tricuspid regurg jet velocity
- right heart enlargement
- ventricular dysfunction
- valve disease
