Pulmonary & CV Systems Flashcards
Thorax Anatomy: Locate Suprasternal Notch
Thorax Anatomy: Locate Clavicular Notch
Thorax Anatomy: Locate Mid Clavicular Line
Thorax Anatomy: At what rib does the sternal angle lie?
@ Rib #2
How Many Ribs are “TRUE”?
The first 7 ribs are true.
What are the 2 major muscles of INSPIRATION
Diaphragm (primary muscle) & External Intercostal (11 muscles on each side of sternum)
What does inspiration do to Intra-Thoracic pressure?
Causes a reduction in pressure.
Contraction of the external intercoastal muscles move the ribs how?
Contraction pulls the lower rib up and out (“elevates” the rib)
When the diaphragm contracts, does it increase or decrease pressure in the thoracic cavity?
decreases pressure
Name 7 muscles of accessory inspiration.
SCM, Scalene, Upper Trap, Pec Major/Minor, Lat, Serratus Posterior Superior, Thoracic Erector Spinae
What are the 2 major muscles of EXPIRATION
Abdominal muscles + Internal Intercostals (11 internal intercostal muscles on each side of sternum)
What is the function of the abdominals during expiration?
Raise intraabdominal pressure to assist thoracic cage to empty lungs.
What is the function of the internal intercostal during expiration?
Compress the thoracic cavity by pulling the ribs together to help assist emptying the lungs.
What are the two handle effects replicated in breathing?
Bucket Handle & Water-Pump
Which Lung has only 2 lobes & why?
Left Lung (b/c of heart real estate)
Describe 4 components of the tracheobronchial tree?
Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchiole
The Right Atrium receives (oxygenated or deoxgenated) blood from where?
Deoxygenated blood from Vena Cava (superior & inferior)
Diastolic Blood Pressure of the Right Atrium?
Normal: 0 to 8 mm HG (central venous pressure)
The Right Ventricle receives blood from the Right Atrium via ____ valve?
Tricupsid Atrioventricular Valve
The Right Ventricle ejects blood to the ______ via what valve?
To the lungs, via the pulmonic semilunar valve
Diastolic Blood Pressure of the Right Ventricle?
Normal: 0 to 8 mm HG
Systolic Blood Pressure of the Right Ventricle?
Normal: 15 to 30 mm HG
The Left Atrium receives (oxygenated or deoxgenated) blood from where?
Oxygenated blood from lungs, via pulmonary veins.
Describe a physical characteristic that makes the Left Atrium different from the Right Atrium?
It’s walls are thicker b/c of higher pressures (from lungs)
What type of valve does the Left Atrium eject blood through?
Bicuspid Valve
The Left Ventricle ejects blood through which valve?
The Aortic Valve (into the aorta to the peripheral vascular systemic circulation)
Systolic Blood Pressure of the Left Ventricle
Normal: 80 to 120 mm HG
Diastolic Blood Pressure of the Left Ventricle?
Normal: 4 to 12 mm HG
Describe a differences in physical characteristic of the Left Ventricle.
Longer, Narrower, & 3x Thicker than the right ventricle.
List the Cardiac Conduction in order.
SA Node > AV Node > Bundle of His > Purkinje Fibers
