History
Used in 60’s and 70’s e.g. Baydock in 1964
Became less popular in 80s (banned)
Still well used in commercial sector therefore will there be a revival?

Retail Impact Analysis
Method of assessing the impact of a new retail development on existing centres (England, 2000)
Method: estimate current expenditure, add future demand, estimate turnover of current stores, estimate new store
Very bad at prediciting deflections
e.g. Bluewater in Kent - London and Croydon deemed only places to be affected
S (1) =
Spatial Interraction Model
Recognises that trade has to come from somewhere
Similar method to begin with but shows better deflections - shows visualisation of where trade has come from
Adapting the model: beta = axciom, Wj = attractiveness based on MH index
S (2) =
Silverburn
Example showing benefits of RIA over SIM
