Public schools were well funded, and could afford elaborate facilities e.g racquets courts.

Why could boys attending public schools play sports and how we’re boys organised
They boarded so they had lots of free time to come up with games and rules. They were organised by houses which lead to possibility of house fixtures, then when railway was developed, interschool fixtures were developed.
How did role models influence sports
People like Thomas Arnold believed in promoting people like 6th formers to take responsibility at schools. So role models would show younger people on sports field how to conduct themselves and behave.
Where did public school boys go after school
Many went to become army officers, spreading game to society.
Teachers/coaches, spreading game, founded NGBs
Factory owners who provided teams, funding, kit, patronage to employees. Factory teams e.g West Ham, Arsenal.
Politicians, encouraging development of space and stadia.
Clergymen (in charge of church), setting up church teams e.g Aston Villa
What happened when boys left public schools
When boys left public schools, they spread sport around, resulting in spread of athleticism.
What is cult of athleticism and what does it mean
Cult of athleticism is physical endeavour and moral integrity, desire amongst public schoolboys to play sport.

In public schools, organised sport was not a feature.
Headmasters were not in favour of sport.
Sport was harsh and informal, reflective of bullying and fagging that occurred amongst boys.
