20th century was a period of time when Victorian, middle class image of sport was merged with modern constructs and growth of technology.

Sport was retained as part of British character - part of being British was sport

Commercialisation is something more cooperate, more of private sector.

Free time increased, and more of it was spent on leisure. Structured sport at weekends, Saturday half day. Upper and middle class more time Lower class less time
How did education change across 20th century
National curriculum introduced, PE was compulsory.
Industrial action 1980s restricted sporting opportunities.
How did law and order change in 20th century
Also, there was terrorism during sport. Munich 1972
1900-1960 rules were increasingly regulated and increased legislation in terms of gambling.
More civilised society and written codes of conduct.
1960 onwards, tainted by football hooliganism 70s and 80s and by drugs and doping scandals.

How did gender change in 20th century
Many sports resistant to change 1900-1960 sport and spectating was male dominated, lack of female professionals. Working class women excluded form professional sport due to constraints of time and money. 1960s onwards equality improved,and changes to legislation enhanced opportunities for females in amateur and professional sport
How did class change in 20th century
Many sports tried to maintain traditional identity, so they did not become professional until late e.g rugby. Football played by lower class Rugby/cricket played by middle class.
How d8d boxing evolve in 20th century
Boxing had evolved from bare knuckle roots to being more civilised. Boxers wore gloves and there was no biting or kicking. Fights were more organised and spectators paid to watch.
How did being upper/middle class affect spot
Golf was mainly played by Upper/middle classes, the clubhouses were important venues for social and business networks and gave status to males who were members.
Rugby union, cricket and Olympic events popular amongst upper and middle class.
Rugby union turned professional 8n 1995.
Cricket included gentlemen and players until 1960
How did being working class affect your sports
Working class females initially excluded from sport. Football and rugby league were working class fames, which had many professional players and attracted many spectators Gambling on sports like horse racing was popular amongst all classes Less time for sport than upper class. Bar central to working class activities e.g darts

1944/butler act : became duty of local education authorities to develop the spiritual, mental and physical needs of community.
