Public health management - pandemics Flashcards
What are the different types of influenza?
Influenza A and B are known to cause worst infections in humans
A is responsible for pandemics
C causes more mild symptoms
D infects cattle not humans
Function of haemagglutinin
It is a glycoprotein and responsible for the binding of the virus to the host cell’s membrane
Function of neuraminidase
cleave silica groups from glycoproteins, allowing the virus to infect more host cells
Allows new vision to be released from cells
N1/2 commonly associated with human infection but there are 9 subtypes
Chain reaction of virus infection
Viruses cause excessive release of cytokines → starts excess of biological processes → chain reaction of more cytokine release → more damage → necrosis
Swine flu
Respiratory disease in pigs, cases inhuman are rare
Responses to outbreaks
Vaccines and antivirals
