Public Health Flashcards
What is used to evaluate the success of a screening program (2)?
Positive predictive value (pos screen = pos disease)
Negative predictive value (neg screen = neg disease)
What are the 3 stages of preventing risks?
Primary - prevent disease before occurrence
Secondary - reduce impact of disease that has occurred
Tertiary - soften impact of ongoing illness that has lasting effects
What is sensitivity and specificity?
Sensitivity = true pos Specificity = true neg
What is cause and risk factor?
Cause = have to be present for disease to occur
Risk factor = associated with increased risk of disease
What is the study of how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why?
Epidemiology
What are the 3 Ps of Public Health?
Prevent diseases
Promote health
Prolong life
What is incidence?
New cases present/ number exposed (per 1000) in a defined time period
What is prevalence?
Total cases present/ people at risk (per 1000) in a defined time period
What data is used to predict outcome, plan healthcare policies and services? (5)
Incidence, Prevalence, QoL, Mortality, Morbidity
What is used in scotland to give a relative measure of deprivation and assess risk?
Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation
What is morbidity?
Frequency of which disease appear in a population
What are the top 2 levels of evidence?
Systematic reviews followed by RCTs
What does RCTs aim to reduce?
Sources of biasness
What does systematic review involve?
Identifying, selecting and critically appraising primary research
What is the group with placebo/ no intervention in RCTs called?
Control group
