PT 691 Shoulder Muscles Flashcards
Pectoralis major m.
Clavicular head: anterior surface of medial half of clavicle
Sternocostal head: anterior sternum; ribs 1-6
Lateral lip of intertubercular groove of humerus
Lateral & medial pectoral nerve
Clavicular head: C6
Sternocostal head: C7,C8
Adducts and IR the shoulder, draws scapula anteriorly and inferiorly;
acting alone, clavicular head flexes shoulder joint and sternocostal head and extends it from the flexed position
Pectoralis minor m.
3rd-5th ribs near their costal cartilages
Medial border and superior surface of coracoid process of scapula
Medial pectoral nerve
Stabilizes scapula by drawing inferiorly and anteriorly against thoracic wall
Subclavius m.
Just know where it is
Serratus anterior m.
External surfaces of lateral parts of 1st-8th ribs
Anterior surface of medial border of scapula
Long thoracic nerve
C6, C7
Protracts scapula and holds it against thoracic wall; rotates scapula
Trapezius m.
Medial 3rd of superior nuchal lone, external occipital protuberance, nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7-T12 vertebrae
Lateral 3rd of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Spinal accessory nerve, CN XI and C3-4 spinal nerve
Upper: elevates scapula;
Lower: depresses;
Middle: retract scapula;
Upper and lower acts together to rotate glenoid cavity superiorly
Latissimus dorsi m.
Spinous processes of inferior 6 thoracic vertebrae, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inferior 3 of 4 ribs
Floor of intertubercular sulcus (groove) of humerus
Thoracodorsal nerve
C6, C7
Extends, adducts, and medially rotates shoulder joint;
raises body toward arms during climbing
Rhomboid major/ minor m.
Major: spinous processes of T2-T5 vertebrae
Minor: nuchal ligament;
spinous processes of C7 and T1 vertebrae
Major: medial border of scapula from level of spine to inferior angle
Minor: triangular area at medial end of scapular spine
dorsal scapular nerve
C5
Retracts scapula and rotates glenoid cavity inferiorly;
fix scapula to thoracic wall
Levator scapulae m.
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
Medial border of scapula superior to root of spine
Dorsal scapular and cervical spinal nerves
Elevates scapula and rotates glenoid cavity inferiorly
Deltoid m.
Lateral 3rd of clavicle; acromion and spine of scapula
Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Axillary nerve
C5
clavicular (anterior) part flexes and medially rotates shoulder joint;
acromial (middle) part abducts shoulder joint;
spinal (posterior) part extends and laterally rotates shoulder joint
Supraspinatus m.
Supraspinous fossa of scapula
Superior fact of greater tubercle of humerus
Suprascapular nerve
C5
Initiates and assists deltoid in abduction of shoulder joint and acts with other rotator cuff muscles
Infraspinatus m.
Infraspinatus fossa of scapula
Middle facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Suprascapular nerve
C5
Laterally rotate shoulder joint; help hold humeral head in glenoid cavity of scapula
Teres minor m.
Middles part of lateral border of scapula
Inferior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Axillary nerve
C5
Laterally rotate shoulder joint; help hold humeral head in glenoid cavity of scapula
Subscapularis m.
Subscapular fossa (most of anterior surface of scapula)
Lesser tubercles of humerus
Upper and lower scapular nerves
C6
Medially rotates and adducts shoulder joint;
helps hold humeral head in glenoid cavity
Teres major m.
Inferior part of lateral border of scapula and posterior surface of inferior angle of scapula
Medial lip of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Lower subscapular nerve
C6
Adducts and medially rotates shoulder joint
Biceps brachii m. (repeat)
Short head: coracoid process of scapula
Long head: supraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Radial tuberosity of radius
Musculocutaneous nerve
C6
Flexes and supinates forearm
