O: transverse process of atlas
I: jugular process of occipital bone
A: flexes and stabilizes the head

O: posterior tubercle of transverse C4-C6
I: second rib
A: flexes the neck laterally; elevates the second rib

Middle scalene
O: posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C2-C7
I: first rib
A: flexes neck laterally; elevates first rib

Anterior scalene
