what are the three classic characteristics of psychosis?
hallucinations
delusions
disorder of the form of thought
what single symptom characterises psychosis?
lack of insight
what is a hallucination?
a perception which occurs in the absence of an external stimulus
how can hallucinations be induced in most people?
things like sensory deprivation and lack of sleep
what is ideas of reference?
when a person gives significant meaning to innocent, coincidental events
i.e. thinking the TV is talking about them
what is paranoia?
the belief that external events are related to oneself
what are delusions?
fixed, falsely held beliefs
they are held with unshakeable conviction
what is a primary delusion?
one that arrives fully formed in the consciousness
no need for explanation
what is a secondary delusion?
a delusion that is formed as an attempt to explain other anomalous experiences e.g. hallucinations
what type of delusion is more common?
secondary
what is circumstantiality?
when a patient talks around a point but eventually gets to it
what is tangentiality?
when the patient goes completely off topic and doesn’t go back to what they were saying
what is thought insertion?
thoughts being placed in the head
what is thought withdrawal?
thoughts being removed from the head
what is thought broadcasting?
believing that everyone knows your thoughts
