Psychopathology - OCD Treatments Flashcards
Introduction to SSRIs
SSRIs : Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
- Citrrulline, Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine
Used to treat OCD
How SSRIs work
Aim to reduce OCD symptoms by boosting serotonin
SSRIs inhibit the reuptake of serotonin
More serotonin remains in the synapse
Increased chance of serotonin binding to receptors
- enhanced serotonin signalling in the brain
Evidence supporting SSRI use
Soomro: review of 17 studies
Over 3000 participants
SSRIs more effective than placebos for OCD
Reduced symptoms in 6-13 weeks of treatment
Advantages of drug therapy
Quicker results compared to cognitive treatments
Less demanding on patient motivation and commitment
Suitable for those who find therapy challenging
Can provide relief when other treatments are not feasible
Limitations of drug therapy
Treats symptoms rather than underlying causes
May not agpdress broader factors - past trauma
Side effects: nausea, headaches, insomnia
Passive treatment approach
Comparing drug therapy to CBT
CBT: has no physical side effects
Can be more empowering for patients
Address is thought patterns and behaviours
Drug therapy may be quicker but less comprehensive
