What system classifies and specifies mental health problems?
Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
What is a phobia?
It’s a type of anxiety disorder characterised by uncontrollable, excessive fear and anxiety caused by a stimuli (object, place, situation)
What is the DSM’s categories for phobias?
- Specific phobia (caused by stimuli)
- Social anxiety (fear of social situations)
- Agoraphobia (phobia of being in public places/outside)
What is the DSM’s categories for depression?
- Major Depressive Disorder - short term depression
- Persistent Depressive Disorder - long term
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder - disruption to mood before or during menstruation
What is the DMS’s categories for OCD?
- Obsessions
- Compulsions
What is depression?
A mood disorder that causes sufferers to experience chronic low mood
What is OCD?
an anxiety disorder where sufferers experience persistent and intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and/or compulsions
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
- Avoidance
- Panic (crying, screaming)
- Disruption
What are the emotional characteristics of phobias?
- Anxiety Emotional
- Responses are unreasonable (their response to phobia is beyond reason/out of proportion of danger posed)
What are the cognitive characteristics of phobias?
- Selective attention to stimuli
- Irrational beliefs
- Cognitive disorders (perception of phobic stimuli may be distorted)
What are the behavioural characteristics of depression?
- Activity level
- Disruption to sleep and eating behaviours
- Aggression and self harm
What are the emotional characteristics of depression?
- Low self-esteem
- Low mood
- Anger
What are the cognitive characteristics of depression?
- Poor concentration (may find it difficult to stick with tasks as they usually would)
- Dwelling on the negative
- Absolutist thinking (have black and white thinking)
What are the behavioural characteristics of OCD?
- Avoidance (avoid situations that may trigger anxiety)
- Compulsions
What are compulsions?
Intense, uncontrollable urges to perform tasks and behaviours
