Psychopathology - Cognitive Treatment AO1 Flashcards
What is CBT?
A form of therapy used to help patients with depression that aims to directly combat irrational cognitive biases. It also involves Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT)
What is REBT
it’s a therapy that was developed by Ellis and is based on the idea that depression is the result of irrational thinking. It helps the patient understand that these thoughts are irrational and the consequence of thinking this way
How are irrational beliefs challenged in CBT?
The ABC model is used to record irrational beliefs and the REBT extends this model to the ABCDE model (D for dispute, E for effect)
What are the types of disputing?
- Logical (does thinking this way make sense?)
- Empirical (where is the proof that this belief makes sense?)
- Pragmatic (how is this belief likely to help me?)
What is the effect of disputing?
It changes self-defeating beliefs to rational ones which will help them feel better and become more self-accepting
What is the homework aspect of CBT?
When a client is asked to complete assignments or goals to boost self esteem between therapy sessions and it puts rational beliefs into practice. These are only given if the patient is believed to be fully capable of completing it as otherwise it would reinforce their feeling of ineptness.
What does CBT homework include?
Hypothesis testing of negative thoughts through behavioural coping skills. They are also taught thought catching techniques to identify the onset of negative thoughts.
What is behavioural activation?
When patients are encouraged to become more active and engage in pleasurable activities. This is because being active leads to rewards that act as an antidote to depression.
