What is the definition of Conformity?
A change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group
What are the three types of Conformity?
Internalisation - Identification - Compliance
What is the deepest level of Conformity?
Internalisation
What is the most superficial level of conformity?
Compliance
What is Internalisation?
Internalisation is the Deepest level of conformity - We take the majority view because we believe it to be correct
How does Internalisation alter our Behaviour?
It is a far reaching, Permanent change even when the group is absent
When is internalised conformity displayed?
Both in Public and in Private
What is Identification?
A moderate type of conformity where we agree with parts of the majority belief
How does Identification alter Behaviour?
It causes us us to act the same way as the group in their presence because we want to be a part of it
When is identification conformity displayed?
In public and sometimes in Private
What is Compliance?
A temporary and shallow type of conformity - We go along with the majority even though we don’t agree
How does compliance alter our behaviour?
We experience change in our opinions and actions to match the group but only in there presence
When in Compliance conformation displayed?
In public but NOT in private
