What is social change?
The way in which society develops over time to replace beliefs, attitudes and behaviours with new norms and expectations
What is consistency?
Displaying a consistent viewpoint and intent - lends credibility, convincing the majority
What is deeper processing?
Where people think about the issue instead of blindly accepting - can then challenge norms, bringing change
What is drawing attention?
Making the majority aware of the need for social change
What is the augmentation principle?
Majority pays more attention when risky actions are taken by the minority as they see the sacrifice they are making
What is the Snow ball effect?
Once some majority members pay attention, more do as the minority view gathers momentum
What is Social Cryptoamnesia?
Where the Majority know social change has occurred but cannot remember how or its origin
What is Normative social influence?
Where social change can be encouraged by reporting the behaviour and attitudes of the majority to convince more people
What is Gradual commitment?
Where you make a small request first so later, larger requests are harder to deny
