Psychology: Learning Flashcards
Learning
The acquisition of knowledge, skill, attitudes, or understanding as a result of experience.
Classical conditioning
Includes 2 different stimuli & the subject learns that 1 of those stimuli is often followed by the other.
Operant Conditioning
A learning method that uses rewards & punishments to modify voluntary behaviors.
Observational Learning
A social learning process where people learn new skills, behaviors, or attitudes by observing & intimating others.
Stimulus
In the context of learning, a sensory event that an individual can detect.
UCS
Unconditioned stimulus
UCR
Unconditioned response
NS/CS
Conditioned stimulus
CR
Conditioned response
Stimulus
Cause
Response
Effect (behavior)
Unconditioned
Doesn’t have to be learned - innate or natural
Conditional
Has to be learned
Antecedent & behavior
Classical conditioning
Behavior & Consequence
Operant conditioning
Law of Effect
Behaviors that have a pleasant outcome, are more likely to be repeated.
Behaviors that have an unpleasant outcome, are less likely to be repeated.
Reinforcement
Goal is to increase likelihood of behavior.
Punishment
Goal is to decrease likelihood of behavior.
Positive
Addition of something.
Negative
Subtraction of something.
Positive Reinforcement
Introduce something PLEASANT to increase behavior.
Negative Reinforcement
Take away something UNPLEASANT to increase behavior.
Positive Punishment
Introduce something UNPLEASANT to decrease a behavior.
Negative Punishment
Take away something PLEASANT to decrease a behavior.
Reinforcement
Create a favorable condition.
Punishment
Create a unfavorable condition.
Fixed Interval
Unchanging amount of time (how long?)
Reinforcement given after a fixed period of time if action is completed.
Variable Interval
Changing amount of time (how long?)
Reinforcement given after varying periods of time if action is completed.
Fixed Ratio
Set number of actions (how many?)
Reinforcement given after action completed a fixed amount of times.
Variable Ratio
Changing # of actions (how many?)
Reinforcement given after action completed a varying amount of times.
