What is coping?
process of constantly changing cognitive and behavioural efforts to manage specific external and or internal demands or conflicts appraised as taxing or exceeding ones resources
What are the 2 types of coping?
problem focussed coping
emotion focussed coping
What is problem focussed coping?
efforts to alter or manage the problem that is causing the stress for the individual concerned
eg- goal setting
What is emotion focussed coping?
regulating the emotional responses to the problem that causes stress for the individual

What things are involved in CBT?
thoughts which create feelings
feelings create behaviour
behaviour reinforces thoughts

What are the 2 things we can change in CBT?
behavioural therapy- changing behaviour should change our thoughts then feelings, if feelings are negative, the cycle becomes negative
cognitive therapy- changing thoughts
What are the 3 types of goals?
outcome goals
performance goals
process goals
Why are goals good for cognitive interventions?
creates a focus and can replace negative thoughts with goals
What are outcome goals?
focus on competitive result
What are performance goals?
focus on achieving standards or performance objectives independently of other competitors
will try to improve my serve percentage from 40-50
What are process goals?
focus on actions an individual must engage in during performance to perform well
eg maintain long stretched arm in swim stroke
What are the problems with goal setting?
convincing individuals to set goals
failing to set specific goals
setting to many goals can be overwhelming
failing to adjust goals
failing to recognise individual differences
not providing any follow up or evaluation
What is an effective way of setting goals?
SMART
What does SMART stand for?
specific measurable attainable relevant time based
