Define arousal
How involved and committed a player is to a game or situation.
Define stress
A state of mental and nervous strain, leading to anxiety and nervous tension.
Define apprehension
Feeling fearful about the future.
Define anxiety
Strong feelings of apprehension, nervousness and worry.
Define extrovert
An outgoing, socially confident person.
Define introvert
A quiet and shy person.
Define motivation
The drive to succeed and desire to achieve a goal.
Define intrinsic motivation
Motivation from within, wanting to succeed for the satisfaction of playing well or for the enjoyment.
Define extrinsic motivation
Motivation from the external environment, rewards or pressures.
Define intrinsic reward
A reward that gives a person internal satisfaction from doing well.
Define extrinsic reward
A physical reward given to the person. Trophy, money, praise…
Define indirect aggression
No actual contact with the opponent.
E.g. Tennis serve
Define direct aggression
Actual body contact between players.
E.g. Rugby
Define fatigue
Feelings or extreme physical or mental tiredness caused by extreme/over exertion.
Define local muscular fatigue
When a muscle or muscle group is unable to carry on contracting and movement stops.
List the characteristics of an introvert
- Don’t actively seek excitement
- Tend to be shy and quite
- Prefer calm environments
- Dislike the unexpected
List the characteristics of an extrovert
- Loud and confident
- Seek change and excitement
- Bored quickly, poor at tasks that require a lot of concentration
- Perform better at lower arousal levels
Types of sport introverts would prefer
Sports with fine movements, closed skills, repetitive actions and regular routines.
Closed skills are in a controlled environment.
Types of sports extroverts would prefer
Open and changing environment and gross movements.
They perform better at lower arousal levels.
