What is digital TV?

Informative, educational, instructive, and entertainment.
What are the characteristics of informative programmes?
News, sport update programmes e.g. Sky news,. Based on fact, gives viewer information on a sport, event or club. Gives results, updates and current issues in sport.
What are the characteristics of educational programmes?
Deal with coaching and helping people learn skills and tactics e.g. BBC Bitesize. May be documentary based e.g. History of sport.
What are the characteristics of instructive programmes?
Teaches the viewer about a specific sport. E.g. During break in cricket, they have a master class where expert coaches give points to young players.
What are characteristics of entertaining programmes?
Designed for enjoyment e.g. Coverage of a game or event. Highlight programmes e.g. Match of the day.
Define role model
Someone who others aspire to be like. People look up to the, and they set an example to follow.
Define inspirational
Someone who is able to motivate and encourage people.
Define sponsorship
When a company gives financial aid to a sport, event or individual, in return for associating their company name with the sport or individual. It can also be used to endorse products.
Examples of things that can be sponsored
Teams, individuals, competitions, facilities and grounds, a sport.
Define endorse
To give approval or support to the product.

Football, rugby, formula one, golf, tennis

Olympics, World Cup, 6 nations,

What is a league?
All teams/players play each other. Often done twice at home and a fixture.
Most common competition format.
Advantages of league format
- Everyone gets the same number of games
- fixtures organised in advance, good for ticket sales
- large number of teams with divisions
Disadvantages for league format
- long time to complete competition
- it takes a lot of time to much up divisions if you are very low down
- fixtures can get congested at the end of season if postponed due to weather
What is a knock out competition?
Where teams compete and only the winner advances to the next round while the loser leaves.
Advantages of a knockout competition
- quick and easy to organise
- allows large number of competitors
- high excitement as losers are excluded
- play best from start, all or nothing every game- no comebacks
Disadvantages of knock out competitions
- no second chances
- byes or preliminary rounds/ qualifiers if there’s the wrong number of teams
- good teams knocked out early
What are ladder competitions?
You challenge players a set number of places above you and you take their position if you win.
Advantages of ladder
- Suited to squash, badminton and tennis
- easy to run
Disadvantages of ladders
- progress can be quite slow
- only available when entry numbers are quite small
What are combination events?
Combine the competition formats
Advantages of a combination event
- as many games as you like
- teams have more than one chance to qualify
- lots of teams can be entered
Disadvantages of combination events
- long time to complete
- meaningless games where both teams have qualified
Define boycott
Not using or dealing with something as part of a protest.
