Categorical Approach
There are 10 categories of personality disorders, which can be grouped into 3 clusters
Cluster A
Odd or Eccentric Behaviors
- Paranoid Personality Disorder
- Schizoid Personality Disorder
- Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Cluster B
Dramatic, Emotional, Erratic Behaviors
- Antisocial Personality Disorder
- Borderline Personality Disorder
- Histrionic Personality Disorder
- Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Cluster C
Anxious or Fearful Behaviors
- Avoidant Personality Disorder
- Dependent Personality Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
Cluster A: Paranoid
distrust and suspiciousness about the motives of the individuals with whom they interact
Cluster A: Schizoid
- lack of emotionality in social situations
- lack of desire to have social relationships
Cluster A: Schizotypal
- peculiarities of thought (magical thinking), appearance, behavior
- emotionally detached & socially withdrawn
Cluster B: Antisocial
Inability to respect the rights of others; irresponsible or unlawful behavior that violates social norms
Cluster B: Borderline
- Intense, unstable emotions and personal relationships
- chronic anger
- fear of being abandoned
- self-harm
- black-white thinking
Cluster C: Histrionic
Excessive emotionality and attention seeking; inappropriate sexual or seductive behavior
Cluster B: Narcissistic
Grandiose sense of self-importance and a need for constant admiration; lack of empathy for others
Cluster C: Avoidant
- avoidance of interpersonal contact bcos of risk of rejection
- fear of criticism + feelings of inadequacy in social situations
- inhibits development of intimate relationships bcos of fear of being ridiculed + feeling shamed
Cluster C: Dependent
Need for others to take responsibility for major areas of life; feelings of discomfort or helplessness without support from other people
Cluster C: Obsessive-Compulsive
- Perfectionistic; over-conscientious, indecisive; stiff; unable to express affection
- Extreme dedication to work but frequently missing deadlines
- Preoccupation with details, rules, lists, and order, which can result in missing the major objective of an activity
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Disregard for, and violation of the rights of others
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Excessive emotionality and attention seeking
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation
Dependent Personality Disorder
Submissive and clinging behavior related to an excessive need to be taken care of
Schizoid Personality Disorder
Detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotional expression
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Distrust and suspiciousness in which others motives are interprets as malevolent
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality
Preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control
