Humanistic Theory of Personality
A growth-oriented view of human beings
Two Major Humanistic Theorists
- Abraham Maslow
- Carl Rogers
Abraham Maslow

Carl Rogers
humans strive to actualize full potential if they receive unconditional positive regard
Self-Actualization
The realization of ones’ uniquely creative, intellectual, or social potential; a very personal experience
Self-Actualization Theory: Major Assumptions
- Basis for the study is the person’s subjective perception of his/her self concept
- Every person has a tendency toward self-actualization
- Every person has a basic need for positive regard
Actual/Real Self:
the way people see themselves
Ideal Self
How people would like to see themselves
Undesirable/Feared Self:
how people do not want to see themselves
The More Similar Between Actual Self and Ideal Self…
the more satisfied people feel about themselves
The More Difference Between the Actual Self and Undesirable Self…
the more satisfied people feel about themselves
Life Satisfaction Can Be Better Predicted
by the discrepancy between the actual and undesired self than by the similarity between the actual and ideal self
Self-Perception: Organized
the self is experienced as a consistent, integrated whole
Self-Perception: Compatible
the perceptions can “fit together”
Self-Perception: Congruent
self-experiences are represented accurately and are included in the self-concept in their accurate form
Need for Positive Regard
it is an encompassing urge for love, respect, acceptance, etc. from significant others
Need for Positive Self-Regard
follows developmentally from the need for positive regard
Positive Regard From Others
