Personality (5) Flashcards
The Cognition Approach
assumes that personality is shaped by a person’s unique perception of the world
(as opposed to perception of the self as Rogers sees it)
Construct
a scientific construct is a name that summarizes a set of observations and coneys the meaning of those observations
Kelly’s Personal Construct Theory
- a belief/concept that summarizes a set of observations or version of reality
- unique to an individual, which that person routinely uses to interpret/predict events
For Kelly, Constructs are
bipolar
e.g. cooperative-uncooperative, boring-interesting, smart-not smart
Two People With Similar Construct Systems Would
be psychologically similar; they will get along well because they interpret the world similarly
Two people with different construct systems would
fail to get along
Anxiety
the result of not being able to understand and predict life events (the future is out of control)
How Do Constructs Fail?
- Sometimes because they are too rigid and impermeable to new experiences
- Sometimes because they are too permeable
A Person Knowns that their Construct System is in Trouble When…
they start having experiences that they cannot understand
Locus of Control
a concept that describes a person’s perception of responsibility for the events in their life
Locus of Control Refers To
whether people tend to locate that responsibility internally (within themselves), or externally (in fate, luck, chance)
Locus of Control is a Major Part of
Julian Rotter’s social learning theory
External Locus of Control
Outcomes outside of your control; determined by fate and independent of your hard work/decisions
Internal Locus of Control
Outcomes within your control; determined by your hard work/decisions
High External Locus of Control
= more likely to confrom
High Internal Locus of Control
= less likely to conform
