Psychotic:
delusional projection - usually persecutory
psychotic denial - don’t like who they are
distortion - delusions of entitlement
When are phase I defense mechanisms normal?
healthy kids before age 5
- adult dreams and fantasy
What are the four level two defense mechanisms?
immature:
- projection - attribute one’s own unacknowledged feelings to others
- somatization -unacceptable emotions –> illness
- acting out- impulsive act to avoid feelings
- splitting - seeing people and events as all good or bad

What are the ten level III defense mechanisms?
Neurotic:
- denial - can’t accept intolerable real facts
- displacement -redirection of feelings towards less cared for object
- dissociation- drastic change in character to avoid stress
- identification - unconscious -behave like influential person
- intellectualization -use words instead of emotions
- isolation of affect - understand but cant feel - numb
- rationalization - superfical reasonable facts to explain away negative feelings
- reaction formation - loving a rival - diametrical opposal
- regresssion - behave like child during stress
- undoing -superstitions to undo thoughts/behavior
