psychodynamic explanation for aggression Flashcards
what would a weak superego mean for a person?
not able to develop morals and ID will take control more meaning more impulsive
what would a deviant superego mean for a person?
this means that your morals may not be socially acceptable and you may commit crimes as your morals don’t know any better
what would a strong superego mean for a person?
you would commit crimes to seek punishment due to strict parenting
what would a dominant ID mean for a person?
you will want to satisfy your urges wether or not they are morally correct or socially acceptable
what would it mean if you have a poorly developed ego?
means that the ego cannot make a decision between the ID or Superego meaning that you cannot control impulses or tolerate frustration, disappointment or stress as you can’t make a logical decision about what to do.
what is the evidence supporting the psychodynamic theory?
Bowlby (1951) - he said the ability to form a meaningful relationship later on in life is dependant on a close relationship with the parents in early years. he studies 44 juvenile delinquents and found that 39% had a disruption in parental attachments in early years compared to 9% in control.
how good is the research for the psychodynamic theory?
mostly case studies which means not generalisable and cannot be applied to the wider population.
what is the credibility of the psychodynamic theory?
this theory is unfalsifiable due to the use of figurative and abstract concepts that we cannot access so we cannot know if the theory is true or not.
