hormonal treatment Flashcards
what is the hormonal treatment for offenders?
Chemical castration, it stops violent and sexual offenders from producing testosterone, which makes people become more violent.
Hormone therapy is focussed on which types of criminals?
Paedophiles - deviant erotic urges focussed on children
Paraphiliacs - abnormal sexual drives that tend to involve dangerous activities and arousal to Atypical situations and people
what is an anti androgen?
this is what stops the testosterone from being created in the body. An androgen is a hormone that regulates the development of sex characteristics.
what are the two types of anti androgens?
MPA, CPA
what does MPA do, and the side effects?
this decreases the functioning of luteinising hormones (testosterone) which lowers the amount of testosterone in the body
side effects - loss of bone density, depression, weight gain
What does CPA do, and the side effects?
binds to testosterone receptors to stop the body from using testosterone
side effects - loss of bone density, kidney and liver dysfunction
study to support the use of MPA?
Maletzky et al (2006) reviewed 275 male cases and evaluated if needed MPA or not. 134 did get MPA others were suggested to get it and others did not need it so 141 did not receive the treatment. Found that supervisors ‘made certain’ 70% of the offenders were homosexual offenders compared to 46% being heterosexual. Every other week convicts got an injection of MPA. People who did not get MPA 31% reoffended, 60% of which were sexual in nature. People who did get MPA committed no new sexual offences and did not go to prison.
