practical investigation Flashcards
what was the aim of the practical investigation
to investigate whether there are differences in the number of participants who respond correctly/incorrectly when asked a leading question about identification compared to a non leading question on identification in eye witness recall
what is the operationalised independent variable?
whether ppts were asked if the inspector was holding a magnifying glass in his left to right hand or asked what he had in his hand
what is the operationalised dependent variable?
how many people answered the question correctly after having either having or not having the leading question
What is the one tailed hypothesis?
ppts who are presented with a leading question will have significantly higher recall of incorrect responses compared to those who were not presented with a leading question
what was the sample?
19 psychology students a mix of male and female 17-18 year olds in an opportunity sampling
what was the procedure?
- watch 2 min video clip
- wrote down what you remember for 1 min
- answer 5 questions (condition A or B)
- given 10 mins to do interference questions in booklet
- answer last 5 questions (same for all ppts)
what were the results?
people who got leading question correct:
leading question - 2
non leading question - 7
people who got a leading question incorrect:
leading question - 7
non leading question - 3
what were the conclusions?
leading questions do affect the memory recall of certain events when participants are faced with them. It can distort the memory and make certain events untrue. This follow the research of loftus and palmer. this therefore shows that memory and eye witness testimonies are unreliable.
