- controlling the interview
- open-ended narration
- probing for details

what are the 4 main features of the cognitive interview?
context reinstatement - mentally recalling the context (both internal and external) of the event (cues to help recall
report everything - recall everything possible about the event, including trivial and fragmented details
change the perspective - recall events from different perspectives such as the offenders viewpoint (avoids distortion and schemas)
change the order - witness recalls the events in reverse order or from the most memorable point (avoids recency effect)
what should interviewers avoid?
leading questions
what did geiselman (1985) find?
Geiselman et al (1985) used 51 ptts from a varied demographic. they viewed 2 films of violent crimes. After 48 hours they were questioned using 1 of 3 interviewing techniques - either cog interview, the standard police interview used by LA police, or hypnosis. he found cog interview could gain more correctly recalled facts (41.2) than the standard police interview (29.4) and 38.0 for hypnosis.
what did Fisher (1989) find?
Fisher et al (1989) found that after training the 7 trained detectives got 47% more info than before and 63% more than untrained detectives.
how good is the research
has been examined in over 100 lab studies conducted in UK, germany, USA, and Australia. they usually observe a nonthreatening video then are asked to recall hours or days later. this is low in mundane realism due to unfamiliar environment and task.
