interviews must be carried out in a non judgemental way with openness
truth must be the focus not a confession, all info must be true and cannot include deception
what does PEACE stand for?
P - planning and preparation
E - engage and explain
A - account
C - closure
E - Evaluate
what should be carried out in the planning and preparation stage?
Identifying aims of interview, objectives and required outcomes.
this should be carried out before the interview.
what should happen in the engage and explain phase?
should build rapport and explain how the interview will take place
what should happen in the account phase?
Invite the suspect to provide account of behaviour, this way should be decided in the planning stage
what happens in the closure phase?
bring the interview to a good conclusion and maintain rapport - explain next steps involved
what happens in the evaluate phase?
interview evaluated against required aims and look over material obtained
what did walsh and bull (2010) find?
walsh and bull (2010) examined details of 142 suspect interviews, he found that good interviewing methods using the PEACE model generally lead to better interviews and securing full accounts including confessions
refuting study?
Clarke and Milne (2001) evaluated 177 interviews two thirds of which had been carried out by PEACE trained officers and he found little difference between PEACE trained and untrained officers
