Psychodynamic- EVAL Flashcards
One strength of the psychoD approach is it’s ability to explain human behaviour, despite Freuds ideas being controversial.
IT explains PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT and gender identity. Also draws a LINK between experiences in CHILDHOOD and out later development. E.g. our relationship with our parents to our relationship with our partners.
STRENGTH as it has a POSITIVE impact on psychology and human endeavours.
One strength of psychoD is that it introduced the idea of PSYCHOTHERAPY rather than physical treatments
This was the FIRST attempt at treating mental disorders PSYCHOLOGICALLY rather than physically and has become one of the MOST used modern day ‘Talking Therapies.’ such as COUNSELLING.
STRENGTH as it has REAL world application and can be USED to help TREAT patients.
Why may psychological treatment (counselling) not be appropriate for some disorders?
Regarded as inappropriate for more SERIOUS disorders e.g. schizo as the symptoms such as paranoia and delusional thinking mean that those with the disorder CANT articulate their thoughts in the way REQUIRED by PSYCHOANALYSIS.
WEAKNESS as it suggests that psychotherapy may NOT be the most useful treatment for ALL mental disorders.
One weakness is that the PsychoD approach is UNTESTABLE
This theory is UNTESTABLE and cannot be DISPROVED because it is all about the UNCONSCIOUS and therefore we cannot test this.
Not open to EMPIRICAL: testing so cant be proven/disproven.
Little Hans case study.
IDIOGRAPHIC approach as it makes GENERAL laws and lacks GENERALISATION.
One weakness with psychoD approach is that it shhows psychich DETERMINISM
Freud believes all our behaviours is DETERMINED by childhood ROOTS and everything is DRIVEN by the UNCONCSIOUS force and has DEEP meaning.
ISSUE because DISMISSES any possibility of free will and it’s UNCOMFY for people to believe that they have NO choice whatsoever on their behaviour.
Also at odds with our JUDICIAL system which says if we commit a crime it’s from your own FREE WILL.
