psychodynamic approach - psychosexual development Flashcards
what is the nemonic for the stages
old age pensioners love guiness
what are each stage in order
oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital
oral - age, focus, consequence
<1 years
focus is through the mouth - pleasure- biting etc
consequence - oral fixation - smoking, nail biting etc
anal - age, focus, consequence
1-3 years
focus of pleasure is anus - child gains pleasure from holding or expelling faeces
consequence:
anal retentive - perfectionist, obessive
anal expulsive - thoughtless and messy
phallic - age, focus, consequence
3-5
focus of pleasure is genitals/area
the child will experience the oedipus/electra complex
consquence: phallic fixation - reckless and narcissistic behaviours
latency - age, focus, consequence
6 years - puberty
hidden focus and earlier conflicts are repressed
no consquence
genital - age, focus, consequence
puberty+
focus is on forming heterosexual relationships where sexual desire becomes conscious along with puberty
consequnce: fixation at this stage means struggling to form heterosexual relationships
what is a basic outline of the oedipus complex (boys) and electra complex (girls)
child feels sexual attraction to opposite gender parents
feels jealous and hostile towards same sex parent as they receive affection from opposite gender parent
fantasies to get rid of them
resolved through eventually identifying with same sex parent then developing superego
oedipus complex - what do hostile feelings towards the father lead towards
boys will fear castration anxiety where there is an irrational fear they will be castrated by the father as punishment
oedipus complex - what happens for it to be resolved
boy identifes with father and he becomes a role model
boys aquire superego and male sex role
substitute attraction towards mother to other women
electra complex - why is the girl hostile towards mothers
already believes she has been castrated and blames the mother
she then experiences penis envy
what is the difference between resolving the oedipus complex and electra complex
it will be less motivating for girls to identify with their mother and give up their father as a love object
so girls identification with their mothers is weaker than boys with fathers so their superego is weaker
