biological approach Flashcards

1
Q

how do we understand human behaviour

A

we need to look at the biological structures and processes within the body. the mind lives in the brain so all thoughts, feelings and behaviour has a physical basis

Q

how does genetics affect psychological characteristics

A

psychological characteristics such as intelligence is inherited similarly to our height and eye colour.

Q

what research has been conducted in genetics

A

it has used monozygotic twins who share 100% dna compared to dizygotic who share 50%. recent research has found MZ twins have an increased concordance rate of developing schizophrenia compared to DZ

Q

how does neural - neurochemistry play its role

A

chemicals can determine behaviour. at the synapse signals are sent between neurones by chemicals called neurotransmitters

Q

how can imbalances in neurotransmitters affect behaviour

A

imbalances in the number of neurotransmitters are associated with atypical behaviour. for example low levels of serotonin is associated with depression and OCD

Q

role of neural - brain structure

A

structure of organs such as the brain, central nervous system and peripheral nervous system can determine our behaviou

Q

brain structure and functions

A

different lobes of the brain are linked with general functions such as the occipital love being associated with visual perception

Q

what is evolution and behaviour

A

genes allow evolution to take place. natural selection by darwin ensures characteristics providing an evolutionary advantage pass from one generation to the next so useless genes die out

Q

usefulness pete

A

p-useful due to having real world application - drug therapies
e-drug therapies developed for many mental illnesses based on research into neurotransmitters. Medications like antidepressants have been developed, helping people manage mental illnesses. it forms an explanation of why mental illnesses occur and helps people live a normal life
e-drugs like antidepressants may be successful for some patients but not for everyone. challenges value of the b.approach and suggests brain chemistry alone doesnt account for all cases of mental illness such as depression

Q

pet supporting evidence

A

p - supporting evidence into how brain structure affects behaviour through phineas gage
e - what happened to him etc ratiu et al’s research
t - supports the approach’s theories of how behaviour is linked to the structure of our brain, shows how damage to the structure of the brain changed behaviour

Q

pet - opposing theory

A

p-cognitive approach
e-believies behaviour is a result of thoughts and cognitive processes such as schema, it explains the process of how humans understand and react to information unlike b.approach
t-its better as biological approach’s research causes causation fallacy
