- ID, pleasure principle, from birth, unconscious, demands gratification
- EGO, reality principal, age 2, defense mechanisms
- SUPEREGO, phallic stage, age 5, morality principle, sense of right and wrong, punishes ego with guilt

- each stage has a conflict that must be resolved
- if it isn’t solved the child becomes stuck/ fixated on that stage
- oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital
