- freedom and personal growth are ideas associated with the western world
- collectivist cultures (India) cant identify with these ideas
- approach is a product of low cultural context

Agents..forced effect..subjective.. no science

- Self-determinism and the belief that we’re active agents in our development
- both external and internal forces affect this
- people are unique so laws should be subjective rather than general
- rogers and Maslow reject scientific models

- ability to reach full potential
- Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- deficiency needs need to be fulfilled for goals to be achieved
- there are many psychological barriers that can prevent self-actualization

what is congruence with self and ideal self?

- Self-actualization isn’t possible when there’s a big gap (incongruent)
- Rogers made client-centered therapy
- said incongruence can be caused by limits of love
- Rogers technique was to give unconditional positive regard
